My work begins with 16mm film as a material rather than only as a recording medium.I expose it, develop it, alter it and transform it — with or without a camera.
I work with plant impressions, chemical reactions, gold leaf, paint, manual processing and print film.
These processes allow the image to remain partly unpredictable. Accidents, traces and material changes become part of the film rather than something to be corrected.
In performance, this relationship to chance extends into sound.I do not compose a soundtrack to accompany the films; I play with them.
Radio frequencies, theremin, bowed bass and electric violin become other materials within the projection space.
The sound can follow an image, contradict it, interrupt it or create another rhythm alongside it.The film may be fixed on the strip of celluloid, but the experience of the film is never fixed.
Each performance is a new encounter between film, light, sound and body.
